[Army] Private John M. Alexander 38562162 US Army 19th Regimental Combat Team 24th Infantry Division was a participant in the Battle of Mindoro in the Philippines during December 1944. He fell ill there and eventually died of Typhus Fever on 20 February 1945. He was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the High Valley Baptist Church Cemetery at Bend, San Saba County, Texas on 12 October 1948.

[AirCorps] Second Lieutenant Elford R. Bowman O-686627 US Army Air Forces 74th Fighter Squadron 23rd Fighter Group 14th Air Force was the pilot of P-51C 43-24986 out of Luliang Airfield, China on 28 October 1944 on a ferry mission to Luichow Airfield, China. [MACR 9724 ] There were eight P-51 aircraft in this formation heading to Luichow when they encountered bad weather and overcast skies. 2Lt Bowman's P-51 was last sighted about 30 miles southeast of Kweilin Airdrome, China. Since he did not arrive at the destination he was statused as missing. The War Dept issued a FOD, finding of death, after one year plus one day and declared him dead 29 October 1945. 2Lt Bowman is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.

[AirCorps] Major Louis H. Bowman O-417937 US Army Air Forces Headquarters 405th Fighter Group 9th Air Force IX Tactical Air Command was piloting a P-47D 42-28685 on 22 September 1944 out of Saint-Dizier Air Field , France on a combat ground support mission to target area of Luneville, France. [MACR 9287 ] During a dive bomb run, Maj Bowman's aircraft was hit by enemy anti-aircraft flak and immediately crashed and burned near Dieuze, France , he did not deploy his chute. No details of burial or of the status of missing being changed, but his remains were recovered and reinterred in the Lorraine American Cemetery in France.

[AirCorps] Private Lawrence L. Brown 38229973 US Army Air Forces 324th Fighter Squadron ('324th Fighter Sqd' as seen on his headstone, but this unit's history was not found. No other information of his service was found). The newspaper only states that he died on 27 March 1943 in the Walter Reed hospital at Washington, D.C., but no cause of his death was given or where he was stationed. [Army] Private First Class Paul N. Casbeer 38514810 US Army 115th Infantry Regiment 29th Infantry Division had survived the D-Day landing in France and had battled through Saint Lo, France. After taking Saint Lo, 18 July 1944, the division continued south and joined in the battle for Vire. Pfc Casbeer was fighting against the enemy German forces between Saint Lo and Vire, France when he was seriously wounded on 30 July 1944. He died in a field hospital on 1 August 1944 of the wounds he received in action and was buried in a temporary grave. After the war his remains were reinterred in the Brittany American Cemetery and Memorial at Saint-James, Departement de la Manche, Basse-Normandie, France.

[AirCorps] Master Sergeant J. W. Graves Jr. 18231913 US Army Air Forces, AAF Base Unit, Randolph Field, Texas. On the very early morning of Tuesday 22 October 1946 at almost 1 a.m. MSgt Graves was operating his motorcycle enroute to his duty station at Randolph Field. He crashed head-on in a collision with a car, driven by another Randolph Field airman Howard D. Tompkins 27, just 3.2 miles north of the base on Booker Road . MSgt Graves was killed instantly . His body was sent to San Saba and interred with military honors in the San Saba City Cemetery, San Saba, San Saba County, Texas on Wednesday 23 October 1946.

[AirCorps] Staff Sergeant Isaac R. Guyton 18083577 US Army Air Forces 708th Bombardment Squadron 447th Bombardment Group 8th Air Force was a waist gunner, on his first mission, aboard B-17G 42-37868 out of Rattlesden Airfield, England on 29 April 1944 on a combat bombing mission to the target at Berlin, Germany. [MACR 4251 ] The B-17 was attacked by five Fw-190 enemy German fighters and took many hits of 20mm bullets which set it on fire. The pilot gave the order to bailout and six of the crew did bailout and become captured, the other four were killed by the fighters or the crash and burn. The plane crashed six miles north of Helmstedt, Germany, where the dead were buried. After the war, SSgt Guyton's remains were reinterred in the Ardennes American Cemetery and Memorial at Neuville-en-Condroz, Arrondissement de Liège, Liège, Belgium.

[Army] Technician 5th Grade Jack Hamrick 38047174 US Army 814th Engineer Battalion Aviation Corps of Engineers was stationed at Nuthampstead, England north of London. He was working with his engineer unit to build an airfield at Nuthampstead for the 8th Air Force which would use it for the 398th Bombardment Group's B-17s. Tec5 Hamrick died of heart failure on 18 August 1942 and was buried in a temporary grave. After the war his remains were reinterred in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial at Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England.

[Army] Private First Class George R. Hasty 18012403 US Army Medical Corps 232nd General Hospital was stationed on Iwo Jima when he died on 19 May 1945 of acute poisoning, not food poisoning, according to a US Army hospital admission record. No other details were found, so it is not known if it was accidental, suicide, or homicide, but it is listed as a non-battle casualty. Pfc Hasty was buried in a temporary grave on Iwo Jima, Kazan Retto. His remains were repatriated to the US Territory of Hawaii in 1949 and reinterred in the National Cemetery of the Pacific on 3 February 1949.

[Marines] Private Milton N. Hubbert 977468 US Marine Corps C Company 1st Amphibious Tractor Battalion 1st Marine Division Fareast Marine Force. The division landed on Okinawa Island on 1 April 1945 as part of the III Amphibious Corps. Its initial mission was, fighting alongside the 6th Marine Division, to clear the northern half of the island. Pvt Hubbert, operator of an amphibious tractor, was killed by a burst of shrapnel from the enemy Japanese forces on 12 April 1945. He was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1949 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the High Valley Baptist Church Cemetery at San Saba County, Texas on Friday 25 March 1949.

[Army] Private Woodrow W. Jackson 18038677 US Army Coast Artillery Corps 60th Coast Artillery Regiment assigned to anti-aircraft artillery in Manila before the Japanese attacked. The regiment served in the Battle of Bataan and the Battle of Corregidor, and surrendered to the Japanese at the end of the latter on 6 May 1942. Pvt Jackson was taken prisoner at Corregidor and then sent to Manila and in November 1942, along with hundreds of POWs, loaded onto a 'Hell Ship' named Nagato Maru headed for Osaka, Japan. He died of pneumonia and starvation on 18 May 1943 in the POW camp named 3D Yodogawa, Osaka, Japan. Pvt Jackson was buried in a temporary grave at Yodogawa and after the war his remains were reinterred at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.

[Navy] Lieutenant John M. Johnson O-129140 US Navy USS Hornet CV-8 Medical Corps. During the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 26 October 1942, Hornet was attacked by a coordinated dive bomber and torpedo plane attack. Lt Johnson was performing surgery in the ship's operating room when a Japanese bomb hit it and killed him instantly. The ship was scuttled with him and over two hundred other dead sailors aboard. Lt Johnson is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.

[AirCorps] First Lieutenant Jim L. Kuykendall O-423077 US Army Air Forces 27th Fighter Squadron 1st Fighter Group 15th Air Force was piloting a P-38J 42-28645 out of Salsola Airfield (Foggia Satellite #3), Italy on 28 July 1944 on a combat escort mission of heavy bombers to target Ploiesti , Romania. [MACR 7008 ] About 20 miles west of the target the P-38s were attacked by enemy fighters and when the P-38s took evasive action 1Lt Kuykendall's P-38 crashed mid-air at 27,000 feet with another P-38 which exploded and they both went down aflame and killing both pilots. 1Lt Kuykendall's remains have not been recovered, status is MIA with a Finding of Death officially. He is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery in France. There is another cenotaph memorial at the Kuykendall Cemetery in Cherokee, San Saba County, Texas.

[Army] Private First Class Billy J. Lewis 38515565 US Army F Company 315th Infantry Regiment 79th Infantry Division landed on Utah Beach, Normandy, France, 12–14 June 1944 and entered combat 19 June 1944, with an attack on the high ground west and northwest of Valognes, France and high ground south of Cherbourg. The division took Fort du Roule after a heavy engagement and entered Cherbourg, 25 June. It held a defensive line at the Ollonde River until 2 July 1944 and then returned to the offensive, taking La Haye du Puits in house-to-house fighting, 8 July. Pvt Lewis was wounded in action 6 July 1944. On 26 July, the 79th attacked across the Ay River, took Lessay, crossed the Sarthe River and entered Le Mans, 8 August, meeting only light resistance. The advance continued across the Seine, 19 August. Heavy German counterattacks were repelled, 22–27 August 1944, and the division reached the Therain River, 31 August. Moving swiftly to the Franco-Belgian frontier near St. Amand (east of Lille), the division was then moved to XV Corps in eastern France, where it encountered heavy resistance in taking Charmes in street fighting, 12 September 1944. The 79th cut across the Moselle and Meurthe Rivers, 13–23 September, cleared the Forêt de Parroy in a severe engagement, 28 September–9 October, and attacked to gain high ground east of Emberménil, 14–23 October, when it was relieved, 24 October. After rest and training at Lunéville, the division returned to combat with an attack from the Mignevine Montiguy area, 13 November 1944. Pfc Lewis was killed in action against the enemy German forces on 14 November 1944 east of Lunéville, France. He was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Richland Springs Cemetery at Richland Springs, San Saba County, Texas on Sunday 12 December 1948. [Army] Private Edwin R. Lord 38761614 US Army 1861st Station Complement Military Police Section Camp Joseph T. Robinson. He was on the base in a troop carrier vehicle on 19 May 1946 on the rifle range road when the driver didn't make a curve and they over turned, trapping Pvt Lord and one other soldier beneath the vehicle. The two were killed and the driver survived with minor injuries. His body was shipped to San Saba, Texas and interred in the Richland Springs Cemetery at Richland Springs, San Saba County, Texas on Wednesday 22 May 1946.

[Army] Private Raymond L. McNurlen 18081556 US Army Battery C 30th Battalion 6th Field Artillery Regiment was in artillery training at Ft Sill, Oklahoma before being transferred to Camp Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania. He was preparing for embarkation with his unit but he fell ill, and his unit shipped out leaving him behind. Reports were that he had recovered, but it was not to be, he died on 23 September 1942 in the camp hospital of heart failure at East Hanover, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Pvt McNurlen's body was shipped to San Saba, Texas for interment in the Locker Cemetery at Locker, San Saba County, Texas on 28 September 1942.

[Army] Technical Sergeant Steve M. Peacock 38094735 US Army 359th Infantry Regiment 90th Infantry Division. After several weeks of training in England, the 90th landed on the beaches of Normandy, France 9 June 1944. The objective was to swing into the Foret de Mont-Castre, Normandy, France, the southern and heavily wooded slopes of the Hill, and push on to the village of Lastelle, Le Plessis-Lastelle, Normandy, France, south of the forest. The 90th pushed into the dense undergrowth of he now famed Foret de Mont Castre. For the Germans it was hold or perish. If ever before they had fought with single-minded ferocity, they far exceeded it now. The dark-shadowed woods of Mont Castre, that day, felt the shock and impact of men who wouldn’t be stopped against a line that wouldn’t be broken. TSgt Peacock was killed in action against the enemy German forces in the Forest de Mont-Castre, France on the 4th of July 1944. He was buried in a temporary grave in Normandy, France. His remains were repatriated to America in 1948 and reinterred in the Cherokee Cemetery at Cherokee, San Saba County, Texas on 6 May 1948.

[AirCorps] Technical Sergeant Doyle D. Reavis 38133158 US Army Air Forces 337th Bombardment Squadron 96th Bombardment Group 8th Air Force was the top turret gunner aboard B-17F 42-30367 out of Snetterton Heath Airfiled, England on 8 October 1943 on a combat bombing mission to target Bremen , Germany by waypoint Spalding, England. [MACR 852 ] When arriving over the target the B-17 was shot down by Lt Heinz-Gunther Luck in an Fw-190A fighter out of JG-1 at Neuscharrel, Germany and only three were able to bailout. Seven crewmen were killed, including TSgt Reavis, and were buried in temporary graves there in Germany. After the war in 1949 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Richland Springs Cemetery in San Saba County, Texas on 14 June 1949.

Smith 38131798 US Army Air Forces 60th Troop Carrier Squadron 63rd Troop Carrier Group was a passenger on a DC-3 42-47379 out of South Plains Army Air Field, Lubbock, Texas on 16 December 1942 towing a CG-4A glider being ferried with destination Victorville Air Force Station, California. When on the night time take-off at Blythe Airfield , California the DC-3 collided with the unmanned cargo glider and eight Army airmen were killed in the crash, including Pvt Smith. His remains were shipped to Texas and interred in the Harmony Ridge Cemetery, San Saba County, Texas on 24 December 1942.

[AirCorps] Sergeant Woodrow M. Solsbery 18012656 US Army Air Forces Signal Corps was stationed at the Rattlesden Airfield, Newfoundland, Canada and at home on leave before possibly being shipped overseas. On Tuesday 13 July 1943 he was fatally injured in an automobile accident about one mile west of Pear Valley, McCulloch County, Texas on Salt Gap Road. Stephenson 38120882 US Army Air Forces 328th Bombardment Squadron 93rd Bombardment Group 8th Air Force was the flight engineer aboard the B-24D 42-63988 'Birmingham Kritzkrieg' out of Hickham Airfield, England on 13 November 1943 on a combat bombing mission to the target in Bremen, Germany. [MACR 2180 ] On the return to home base the B-24 was shot down by an enemy German fighter Fw-190A over the North Sea . The B-24 did not return home and the aircraft and all of the crew were statused as missing. The War Dept issued a FOD, finding of death, one year plus one day after they were MIA. TSgt Stephenson is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial at Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England.

Thornblom 18231734 US Army Air Forces 597th Bombardment Squadron 397th Bombardment Group 9th Air Force was the radio navigator onboard B-26J 42-96297 on 25 April 1945 when the B-26 was in a landing accident at Peronne-St Quentin Airfield, Estress Mons, France, the aircraft was badly damaged. All of the crew survived the crash, but Sgt Thornblom died of the injuries he received (This account was pieced together from three sources, NARA, Accident Reports, Newspaper). He was buried in a temporary grave in France and in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas on 18 November 1948.

[Army] Private First Class Woodrow W. Tyler 38131801 US Army Amored Infantry Battalion. The San Saba newspaper in July 1942 reports he was in the 80th Armored Regiment, but this unit was remade into the 80th Tank Battalion which did not arrive in France until 1945 with the 8th Armored Division. Pvt Tyler likely transferred to an infantry battalion so that he could go overseas and fight the enemy German forces. He was killed in action on 28 July 1944 in France with an unknown, to me, Army unit. He was buried in a temporary grave in France until after the war when in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Llano City Cemetery at Llano, Llano County, Texas on Thursday 19 February 1948.

[Navy] Seaman Second Class Petty Officer Augustine M. Vasquez 6250895 US Navy USS Barton DD-599. On 12 November 1942, Barton helped escort transports into Guadalcanal's Iron Bottom Sound and that night was part of a group of cruisers and destroyers that intercepted a much stronger Japanese force that included two battleships. In this chaotic action, the first surface engagement of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, USS Barton was torpedoed by an enemy destroyer, broke apart and quickly sank, with the loss of most of her crew. S2 Vasquez was statused as missing on 13 November 1942 by the Navy. The War Dept issued a finding of death one year plus one day after he went missing, and the FOD was dated 14 November 1943. He is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.

[AirCorps] First Lieutenant Newell A. Wells O-433117 US Army Air Forces 33rd Bombardment Squadron 22nd Bombardment Group 5th Air Force was the navigator, 2Lt at the time, aboard the B-26 40-1400 out of the 7-Mile Drome near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on a combat bombing mission to the target at Rabaul, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. Upon arriving at the target late, the B-26 was shot down by an enemy Japanese fighter A6M2 flown by Lt Jg Junichi Sasai of Tainan Kolutai on 18 April 1942 over Rabaul. Only two crewmen were able to bailout, the other five were killed in the explosion and crash into the sea. 1Lt Wells is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.

[Marines] Private First Class Chauncy T. White 830798 US Marine Corps Battery G 3rd Battalion 14th Marines Regiment 4th Marine Division Fleet Marine Force. The 14th Marines was an artillery regiment and was with the 2nd Marine Division in the battle for Saipan, Marianas Islands which began with an assault beach landing 15 June 1944. Pfc White was killed in action on 15 July 1944 during this bloody battle against the enemy Japanese forces. His mother, Mrs. Mrs. Vada White of Georgetown, Texas was notified. [AirCorps] Sergeant Robert A. Williams 38530956 US Army Air Forces 779th Bombardment Squadron 464th Bombardment Group 15th Air Force was a gunner aboard a Ford B-24J-1-FO Liberator 42-50736 out of Pantanella Airfiled, Italy on 17 October 1944 for a combat bombing mission to the Vienna South Ordnance Depot Vienna, Austria. [MACR 16515 ] 2Lt Edward J Degman's B-24 had dropped the load on the target but took a flak hit in the nose and one engine. When at the home base returning from Austria , the nose gear would not extend so he circled while crewmen tried to crank the gear into position. They crashed near the airfield due to engine failure and all 10 crewmen were killed and two passengers, allegedly. Sgt Williams was buried in a temporary grave in Italy until after the war when his remains were repatriated to America in 1948 and reinterred in the Richland Springs Cemetery on 6 December 1948.

[MACR 11386 ] Over the target, an enemy fighter shot the B-29's engine four and set it aflame and sending the B-29 into a flaming dive into the ocean about 28 miles south-southwest of Mamamatsu, Japan. All eleven of the crew were killed, status MIA. Sgt Wood is remembered on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial, Hawaii. [Army] Private Robert F. Yates 38556891 US Army 33rd Armored Regiment 3rd Armored Division. The 3d Armored Division entered combat in France as a whole on 29 June 1944, taking part in the hedgerow fighting. The Division broke out at Marigny and with the 1st Infantry Division swung south in an exploitation of the Saint Lo, France break-through. In August 1944, the Division participated in the heavy fighting involved in closing the Falaise Gap, pocketing the German Seventh Army. Six days later, on 25 August 1944 the Spearhead Division had cut across the Seine River, and was streaking through Meaux, Soissons, Laon, Mons, Namur, and Liege. The 3rd Armored Division breached the Siegfried Line with the capture of Rotgen, on 12 September 1944. Pvt Yates was killed in the vicinity of La Calamine, Walloon Region, Belgium on 11 September 1944 while fighting the enemy German forces. He was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1949 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Fort Bliss National Cemetery at El Paso, El Paso County, Texas on Thursday 16 June 1949.
