[Navy] Boatswain's Mate Second Class Petty Officer Wayne Baker 3561422 US Navy SS Richard Bland Steam merchant Russian convoys. The Richard Bland was carrying a lumber cargo from Murmansk, Russia to New York via Loch Ewe, Scotland and was northeast of Iceland when torpedoed by German Uboat 255 on 10 March 1943. Thirty four persons were lost including BM2 Baker, statused as missing 10 March 1943. The War Dept issued a FOD, finding of death, one year plus one day after the loss on 11 March 1944. He is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial at Coton, South Cambridgeshire District, Cambridgeshire, England.

[AirCorps] Technical Sergeant Norman O. Black 18064508 US Army Air Forces 585th Bombardment Squadron 394th Bombardment Group 9th Air Force was the Engineer-Gunner aboard B-26G 43-34562 out of Boreham Airfield, England on 21 February 1945 on a combat bombing mission to the target Vlotho, Germany. [MACR 12589 ] The B-26 was shot down by Fw-190D flown by Gerhard Just of JG-26 at Vragender , Netherlands. The B-26 aflame and out of control crashed and burned, five crewmen were killed, three bailed out and became POW. The five KIAs together were repatriated to America in 1950 and reinterred together, a group burial in a common grave, in the Zachary Taylor National Cemetery in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky on 17 February 1950.

[RCAF] Flight Sergeant Roger B. Clements 300113 Royal Canadian Air Force 37th Bombardment Squadron Middle Eastern Command was the observer/nose gunner aboard the Vickers 416 Wellington Mark 1C ES989 bomber out of Egypt on 7 September 1942 on a combat bombing mission to the target at Tobruk, Libya. The bomber did not return to home base and no information as to it's demise or location were found. The plane and all of the crewmen were statused as missing and in 1943 were declared dead. Promoted posthumously to Warrant Officer Class II service number R/67894. WO Clements is remembered on the Column 264 in the Alamein Memorial in the Alamein War Memorial at El Alamein, Maṭrūḥ, Egypt.

[AirCorps] Staff Sergeant James L. Collier 18054635 US Army Air Forces Fifth Air Force was a passenger aboard B-24J 44-41254 departing Mokmer Airfield, Biak Island, Indonesia on 26 January 1945 on a non-combat courier mission to Mindoro, Phillipines. [MACR 14226 ] The B-24 was flying low to avoid bad weather but then entered thick fog over land and hit a mountain between Adlay and Carrascal , Mindanao Island, Philippines, and crashed breaking apart, the front section burned but the rear part did not, however all aboard were killed except one Sgt Strawn who was in the rear of the plane. The dead were buried in temporary graves and after the war eight of them including SSgt Collier were repatriated to America and reinterred in a group burial grave at the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri on 10 February 1950.

[Navy] Seaman First Class Petty Officer Joseph H. Conner 9386758 US Navy USS Sangamon CVE-26 was aboard ship leaving the anchorage at Kerama Retto when a enemy Japanese kamikaze pilot bombed and crashed into the deck causing extensive fire and explosions. His action killed eleven sailors, seriously wounded twenty-one and another twenty-five were missing from Sangamon. S1c Conner was one of the missing, and has never been recovered. He is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Honolulu Memorial at Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii.

[Army] Private First Class Earnest E. Denton 38136291 US Army 7th Infantry Division with the Aleutians secured, the Division moved to Hawaii, where it trained in amphibious landing technique and in jungle warfare. On 31 January 1944 the 7th Infantry Division landed on islands in the Kwajalein Atoll in conjunction with the Fourth Marine Division, and in a week of heavy fighting, wrested them from the Japanese. Pfc Denton was killed in action on 2 February 1944 during this offensive against enemy Japanese forces and was buried in a temporary grave and then reinterred at a Hawaiian Island cemetery. His remains were repatriated to America in 1948 and reinterred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas on 9 March 1948.

[Marines] Corporal Clifford W. Doggett 294603 US Marine Corps Battery H Third Battalion 10th Marines Regiment Second Marine Division. The 10th Marines was an artillery regiment and was with the Second Marine Division in the battle for Saipan, Marianas Islands which began with an assault beach landing 15 June 1944. Cpl Doggett was killed in gallant action during this bloody battle against the enemy Japanese forces. His mother, Mrs. Huldah R. Doggett of Houston, Texas was notified. [Army] Staff Sergeant Elwain E. Doggett 38035022 US Army 379th Infantry Regiment 95th Infantry Division. On 16 November 1944 Task Force Bacon, 95th Infantry Division, starts south toward Metz, France along the east bank of the Moselle River, the 379th Infantry, strengthening its attack, takes St Hubert Farm and Moscou Farm. 17 November 1944 Task Force Bacon, gets almost to Metz, stopping for the night within sight of Fort St Julien. Then west of the Moselle River, the 95th Division continues toward Metz. 18 November 1944 Task Force Bacon, pushes into the northeast part of Metz, overrunning Fort St Julien and Fort Bellacroix. The 95th forces west of Metz reach the Moselle River and find all bridges except one blown. The 379th Infantry Regiment drives to the Moselle River at Moulins-les-Metz, where a bridge is down. SSgt Doggett is killed in action during this drive against the enemy German forces and is awarded the Silver Star Medal, posthumously, for his gallantry in action. He was buried in a temporary grave there in France until after the war when in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery at Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas on 2 September 1948. Silver Star and Purple Heart.

[AirCorps] Corporal Thomas B. Galloway 18233104 US Army Air Forces 839th Bombardment Squadron 487th Bombardment Group 8th Air Force served overseas at Lavenham Airfield, England for a year before becoming so ill he had to return home in March 1945. Cpl Galloway died after surgery for a brain tumor at McCluskey Hospital, Temple, Bell County, Texas on 11 August 1945. His body was shipped to Goldthwaite, Texas where he was interred in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery.

[AirCorps] Staff Sergeant Wilton W. Hamilton 38125596 US Army Air Forces 512th Bombardment Squadron 376th Bombardment Group 15th Air Force was the assistant engineer-gunner aboard B-24D 42-72768 out of San Pancrazio Airfield, Italy on 28 December 1943 on a combat bombing mission to Vicenza, Italy. [MACR 1614 ] When they arrived at the target, many of the enemy fighters attacked the B-24s formation and SSgt Hamilton's B-24 was shot down, as were several, by a Bf-109G fighter at Vicenza , Italy. Five crewmen on his plane bailed out and became POWs, but he did not and he and four others were killed in the crash. SSgt Hamilton was buried in a temporary grave and after the war he was repatriated to America and reinterred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on 10 February 1950.

[Army] First Lieutenant William T. Head O-415775 US Army A Company 142nd Infantry Regiment 36th Infantry Division. Attended Officers Maintenance Course at Fort Benning, Georgia in June to September 1942, then to Camp Blanding, Florida for maneuvers, then August 1942 was staged at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts where he was promoted to First Lieutenant on 16 January 1943 while awaiting their turn to shipout at the New York Port of Embarkation on 2 April 1943, for service in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations. He fought the enemy German forces in North Africa, in Italy, and France. On 15 September 1944, the division was attached to the French First Army. The 36th advanced to the Moselle River at Remiremont and the foothills of the Vosges. 1Lt Head was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Purple Heart (Posthumously) for his extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy on 21 September 1944 in France. In a grinding offensive early in December 1944, the division crossed the Meurthe River, breached the Ste. Marie Pass and burst into the Alsatian Plains. 1Lt Head was killed in action 8 December 1944 in the vicinity of Saint Marie Pass, France. He was buried in a temporary grave there until after the war when in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery at Goldthwaite, Mills County, Texas on 14 December 1948.

[Army] Sergeant Herbert T. Hohertz 38104948 US Army K Company Third Battalion 255th Infantry Regiment 63rd Infantry Division. On 18 April 1945 the 255th Infantry continued it's attack in the vicinity of Schwabisch Hall, Germany. The Third Battalion to the northeast of Hall began it's action at 0300 attacking from south of the Kocher River. The attack met stiff enemy opposition but went forward inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy German forces and resulting in the capture of many German prisoners. During the day the battalion cleared the towns of Eltershofen, Buhlerzimmern, Weckrieden, and Veinau. At the end of the day, the Third Battalion Command Post was in Eltershofen, Germany with all of the K Company except for one platoon which included Sgt Hohertz who was killed in action this day. Sgt Hohertz's body was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas on 28 September 1948.

[Marines] Private First Class Fred J. [AirCorps] Staff Sergeant Enoch E. Masters 38135990 US Army Air Force 578th Bombardment Squadron 392nd Bombardment Group 8th Air Force was assistant radio operator-gunner aboard B-24J 42-99981 out of Wendling Airfield, England on 18 March 1944 on a combat bombing mission to the target Friedrichshafen , Germany. [MACR 3328 ] After leaving the target the B-24 was attacked by enemy fighters and sustained damage enough to cause the pilot to order the crew to bailout 30 km north of Freiberg, Germany, which five did, but SSgt Masters and four others did not. SSgt Masters was buried in a temporary grave and after the war his remains were repatriated to Texas and interred in the Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche, Texas on 2 February 1949.

[AirCorps] Staff Sergeant Morriece G. Moody 18039729 US Army Air Forces 386th Bombardment Squadron 306th Bombardment Group 8th Air Force was the tail gunner aboard Boeing B-17F 42-29806 out of Thurleigh Airfield , England on 21 May 1943 on a combat bombing mission to target Wilhelmshafen, Germany and over the target the B-17 was hit by enemy flak. The B-17 did not make it back home but was ditched in the North Sea. 5 drowned and 5 rescued by German seaplane and flown to hospital in Heligoland. 2Lt Young (the bombardier) saw SSgt Moody in the water, inflating his life vest but was never heard of again. Evidently he drowned and was status MIA, until his body was recovered from the sea 7 August 1943 and restatus to KIA, and his remains buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery in Belgium.

[Army] Private First Class Marion H. Murphy 38370373 US Army 394th Infantry Regiment 99th Infantry Division. On 2 March 1945, the division took the offensive, moving toward Cologne and crossing the Erft Canal near Glesch. After clearing towns west of the Rhine, it crossed the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen on 11 March 1945. The 99th Infantry Division was the first complete division to cross the Rhine. They continued to Linz am Rhein and to the Wied River. Crossing on 23 March 1945, it pushed east on the Koln-Frankfurt highway to Giessen. Against light resistance it crossed the Dill River and pushed on to Krofdorf-Gleiberg, taking Giessen 29 March 1945. The 99th then moved to Schwarzenau, 3 April 1945, and attacked the southeast sector of the Ruhr Pocket on 5 April 1945. The enemy German forces resisted fiercely, and Pfc Murphy was killed in action on 7 April 1945 in the Ruhr Valley, Germany. He was buried in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1949 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Lometa Cemetery at Lometa, Lampasas County, Texas.

[Army] Private James T. Owens 38631999 US Army F Company 32nd Infantry Regiment 7th Infantry Division, as part of the joint Army and US Marine US 10th Army, took part in the invasion of Okinawa 1 April 1945 and landed south on Okinawa. For eighty-two days, the 7th engaged in some of the most fierce combat of the entire war in the Pacific. Each successive ridge-line that the 10th Army fought for was dotted with caves, tunnels, and bunkers that the Japanese fought for to the death. Pvt Owens was killed in action on 24 May 1945 by one of the enemy Japanese snipers on Okinawa. He was buried in a temporary grave there until after the war when in 1949 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Center City Cemetery at Center City, Mills County, Texas on Friday 15 July 1949.

[Army] Technical Sergeant Archie Qualls 38343577 US Army 338th Harbor Craft Company Transportation Corps was stationed at the sea port of Antwerp, Belgium where US Army Transport ships could supply the troops in Europe. The harbor craft included tug boats, cargo barges, and floating cranes to help move the equipment and supplies. The occupation phase in Europe was several months underway since V-E day and so it was likely a surprise to his family to hear that TSgt Qualls had been killed. Reported on one of his memorials that on 29 September 1945 he was killed on base at Antwerp, Belgium by a civilian driver who crashed into about thirty soldiers, killing four and injuring several others. TSgt Qualls is interred in the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial at Margraten, Eijsden-Margraten Municipality, Limburg, Netherlands.

Shortly after take off, for reasons unknown, the C-47 crashed into Cleveland Bay, Brisbane, QLD, Ausralia killing four crew and twenty three passengers. TSgt Roberts was buried there in Brisbane until 1948 when his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery at San Antonio, Texas on 9 July 1948.

[Army] Private First Class Edward C. Rost 38682870 US Army 85th Infantry Regiment 10th Infantry 'Mountain' Division in March 1945 took Mound Della Spe, west of Bologna, Italy and cutoff the Axis routes of resupply and communication into the Po Valley, setting the stage for the next Fifth Army offensive. The division maintained defensive positions in this area for three weeks, anticipating a counteroffensive by the German forces. The division resumed its attack on 14 April 1945, attacking Torre Iussi and Rocca Roffeno to the north of Mount Della Spe. On 17 April, it broke through the German defenses, which allowed it to advance into the Po Valley area. Pfc Rost was killed in action on 17 April 1945 in the offensive south of Po Valley, Italy. He was buried there in a temporary grave until 1949 when his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Priddy, Mills County, Texas on 8 March 1949.

[Army] Private Lonnie T. Slaughter 38031345 US Army 200th Coast Artillery Regiment Coast Artillery Corps. Following infantry training, he was deployed to the Philippine Islands, and based at Fort Stotsenburg, Luzon Island. He served as a member of Battery A in the 200th Coast Artillery Regiment , the harbor defenses of Manila and Subic Bays. His unit participated in the battle of the Philippines, the conquest of the Philippine Islands by the Imperial Japanese army and naval forces 8 December 1941 to 6 May 1942. While retreating to the Bataan peninsula, he was captured on 9 April 1942 during the ensuing Battle of Bataan. As a prisoner, his captors subjected him to participate in the "Bataan Death March", incarcerated at the prisoner of war camp #1 Cabanatuan, Luzon Island. This infamous march was followed by forty months in Prisoner of War Camps. Pvt Slaughter was one of the POWs loaded onto the Arisan Maru 'Hell Ship' headed for a POW camp in China or Japan, but it was sunk by a US submarine on 24 October 1944. Pvt Slaughter is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.

[Army] Private Estell A. Spinks 38686799 US Army K Company 253rd Infantry Regiment 63rd Infantry Division arrived in Marseille, France, on 8 December 1944, trained at Haguenau and, under the designation Task Force Harris, protected the east flank of the Seventh Army along the Rhine River. The task force fought defensively from 22 to 30 December 1944 against the enemy German forces, and Pvt Spinks was seriously wounded by German machine gun fire on 24 December 1944 and died in a field hospital on Christmas Day 1944. He was buried in France in a temporary grave until after the war when in 1948 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Oakview Cemetery at Mullin, Mills County, Texas on Saturday 21 August 1948.

[Navy] Seaman First Class Petty Officer Eli Ward Tully 9390362 US Navy Reserve USS Bismarck Sea CVE-95, location Bonin & Volcano Islands, was aboard and crusing off of Iwo Jima when hit by two Japanese kamikazes within two minutes of each other sinking the USS Bismarck Sea with 318 of her crew lost, 26 of them from Texas , including Seaman Tully. He was one of the sailors missing and declared killed in action on 21 February 1945. He is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the Honolulu Memorial at Honolulu, Honolulu County, Hawaii.

[Army] Private First Class Ruth E. Warlick A-809574 US Army Women's Army Corps Troop Carrier Command was a passenger aboard Douglas C-47B 44-76406 out of Accra Airfield, Ghana on 30 May 1945 on a routine transport mission to the Robert's Field, Liberia where she would find her new assignment, along with 17 other WACs also on the aircraft. [MACR 14550 ] The Douglas C-47 disappeared off the Atlantic coast of Drewin , Cote D'Ivoire after sending a distress message. A witness observed the plane hit the water at a 45 degree angle. No wreckage or bodies were ever found and all 21 aboard the C-47 were statused as MIA. Pfc Warlick is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial at Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia.

Edward Eugene Wilmeth born 19 January 1921 in Ebony, Mills County, Texas to Delilah Caldonia 'Callie' Dickens (b. 1883 San Saba County, Texas - d. 1951 Brownwood, Brown County, Texas) age 37 and James Ransom Wilmeth Jr. (b. 1883 Brown County, Texas - d. 1969 Brownwood, Brown County, Texas) age 37. (His name was changed to Eugene Dickens Wilmeth by his mother via birth certificate affidavit on 4 February 1942 filed in Mills County, Texas).

Graduated from Brownwood High School in May 1938. 1940 Census age 19 living in Ebony, JP5 Mills County, Texas with his parents and a sister, away from home at Texas A&M college. He was King Cotton at A&M College in 1942 when they were in the Cotton Bowl and graduated the same year. [Army] Second Lieutenant Eugene D. Wilmeth O-465404 US Army A Company First Battalion 168th Infantry Regiment 34th Infantry Division. After continuing its training in Ireland, the 34th Infantry Division saw its first combat in the North African invasion, 8 November 1942, landing at Algiers and seizing the port and outlying airfields. He was in the 133rd Infantry Regiment and transferred to the 168th in January 1943. Elements of the Division took part in numerous subsequent engagements in Tunisia during the Allied build-up, notably at Sened Station, Paid Pass, Sbeitla, and Fondouk Gap. 2Lt Wilmeth was wounded in action in March 1943 and was hospitalized for two weeks, then he returned to the line. In April 1943 the Division assaulted Hill 609, capturing it on 1 May 1943. The 34th then drove through Chouigui Pass to Tebourba and Ferryville in Tunisia where 2Lt Wilmeth was killed in action on 7 May 1943 by artillery shrapnel. He was buried in a temporary grave and after the war his remains were reinterred in the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial at Carthage, Tunis, Tunisia.

[Army] Captain Lillard G. Wilmeth O-1291739 US Army Headquarters Troop Second Squad 124th Cavalry Regiment, "the last horse cavalry", was in the Burma task force from 1944 until his death. He contracted Scrub Typhus Fever and died 11 February 1945 in a hospital in east India and buried in the Kalaikunda Cemetery. Capt Wilmeth's remains were reinterred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii on 27 January 1949.
