David Kitzmiller Edwards born 21 Jul 1916 in Bristol, Sullivan County, Tennessee to Effie L Crosby (b. 1887 Grainger County, Tennessee - d. 1973 Excelsior Springs, Clay County, Missouri) and William Erwin Edwards (b. 1885 Boones Creek, Washington County, Tennessee).
1920 Census age 3 living in CD2 Grainger County, Tennessee with his grandfather Thomas Crosby, his mother, two uncles and his brother. 1930 Census age 13 living in Morristown, Hamblen County, Tennessee with his mother and a brother. 1935 living in Tennessee. Married Miss Edna Hatchell (b. 1919 Harrodsburg, Kentucky - d. 1977 Los Angeles, California) on 15 Dec 1939, they had two sons. 1940 Census age 23 living in Dallas, JP1 Dallas County, Texas with his mother, his brother and his wife, he being unemployed. Registered for the draft at Ft Collins, Larimer County, Colorado on 16 October 1940 while living there and attending Ft. Collins State College at the Airport and listed his wife, Mrs Edna Edwards of Ft Collins, as his next of kin contact. From a civilian pilot to a US Army Air Forces Flight Officer on 3 June 1944 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Flight Officer David K. Edwards T-223608 US Army Air Forces 20th Ferrying Group was aboard the C-54A 42-107438 on 9 November 1944 and crashed into Marathon Bay, 3.5 miles ENE of Marathon-Florida Keys Airport, Florida after take off from Runway 07, all four crewmen were killed. FO Edwards' body was recovered from the crash site and shipped to Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky for interment in the Spring Hill Cemetery on Tuesday 14 November 1944.
I could not make any connection to McCulloch County, Texas and have concluded that the War Dept mistakenly used McCulloch County, Texas as his home of record during 1946 when compiling casualty lists.
I do not know who is responsible, the military probably since this was early in the war and casualty identities was their responsibility especially to the next of kin.
