[Army] Corporal Marion Flynt Jr. 38441373 US Army Field Artillery Battalion 99th Infantry Division. The 99th Infantry Division arrived in England on 10 October 1944. Put under operational control of V Corps, First Army, it moved to Le Havre, France on 3 November 1944 and proceeded to Aubel, Belgium, to prepare to enter the front lines. The division first saw action on 9 November 1944, taking over the defense of the sector north of the Roer River between Schmidt and Monschau, a distance of nearly 19 miles. After defensive patrolling, the 99th probed the Siegfried Line against heavy resistance on 13 December 1944. The inexperienced troops of the division were lodged on the northern shoulder of the Ardennes Offensive on 16 December 1944. Although cut up and surrounded in part, the 99th was one of the only divisions that did not yield to the German attack, and held their positions until reinforcements arrived. The lines were then moved back to form defensive positions east of Elsenborn Ridge on the 19th. Here it held firmly against violent enemy attacks from 21 December 1944 to 30 January 1945. Cpl Flynt was killed in action on 27 December 1944 in the vicinity of Elsenborn, Belgium. He was buried in a temporary grave there until after the war when in 1947 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Fairview Cemetery at Midland, Midland County, Texas on Sunday 15 June 1947.

[Army] Private First Class Edgar B. Parker 38012245 US Army Battery C 200th Coast Artillery Regiment Anti-Aircraft detachment Coast Artillery Corps. Eight hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japan attacked the Philippines. The newspapers would call it 'The Newest Alamo'. Eisenhower would state, "Never has so much been done with so little" due to the four and a half month heroic stance of troops outnumbered by the entire 15th Imperial Japanese Army. Starvation, disease and lack of weapons and supplies forced the American and Filipino Troops to surrender the Bataan Peninsula on April 9, 1942. The infamous Bataan Death March was indescribable. For 24 days the Japanese marched them on one meal and very little water. Some soldiers had no food and little water for a full ten days. They moved at a snail's pace and those who were too weak to keep going were bayoneted or shot. They were finally imprisoned at Camp O'Donnell, over 20,000 of them. Pfc Parker was transferred to the POW Camp 617 Shinagawa (aka, Tokyo No.2 Branch Camp Ogi-cho, Kawasaki) in Tokyo, Japan where he died on 28 November 1942 of starvation and dysentery. news

[Navy] Lieutenant Junior Grade Frank L. Snodgrass O-187156 US Navy USS Hull DD-350, location Philippine Sea. Fueling operations with the fast, carrier strike-force in the Philippine Sea began on 17 December 1944, but increasingly heavy seas forced cancellation later that day. The fueling group became engulfed next day in an approaching typhoon, designated Cobra, with barometers falling to very low levels and winds increasing above 90 knots. At about 11:00 hours, on 18 December, Hull became locked "in irons", in the trough of the mountainous sea. Unable to steer with the north wind on her port beam, yawing between 80 and 100 degrees, the whaleboat and depth charges were swept off. As the roll increased to 70 degrees, she was pinned down by a gust as the sea flooded the pilot house and poured down the stacks. All hands worked feverishly to maintain integrity and keep the ship afloat during the heavy rolls, but finally, in the words of her commander, Lt. Cmdr James A. Marks, "the ship remained over on her side at an angle of 80 degrees or more as the water flooded into her upper structures. I remained on the port wing of the bridge until the water flooded up to me, then I stepped off into the water as the ship rolled over on her way down". Eleven officers of the Hull, including the executive officer, and 191 enlisted sailors perished in the sea. Lt(jg) Snodgrass is remembered on the Tablets of the Missing in the  Manila American Cemetery and Memorial at Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines.
