Finally taken to a hospital in Belgium where he died on 31 October 1944 of the wounds he received while fighting the enemy German forces. He was buried in a temporary grave in Belgium until after the war when in 1949 his remains were repatriated to America and reinterred in the Abernathy Cemetery at Abernathy, Hale County, Texas on 3 July 1949.
I know why this veteran was initially on the Callahan HR, his NARA DOW plaque has Hometown: Callahan County and he is listed on the Callahan County Casualties 1946, but I can't find anywhere else that his name is associated with Callahan County, Texas. I believe he was misplaced by the hometown of Cottonwood in Callahan County instead of his true hometown at Cotton Center in Hale County.
