His hometown Amarillo, Potter County, Texas. He is not listed as a casualty on the Brown County list, and he is not listed on the original WWII memorial at Coggin Park, Brownwood, Texas.

Captain Samuel H. Lumpkin O-387367 US Army 131st Field Artillery 36th Infantry Division was a battalion surgeon on Java and was part of the 'Lost Battalion' captured by the enemy Japanese forces. He was a prisoner at the Jap's camp Thai (TAI) POW Camp Thailand 13-100 where he was reported dead 1 August 1943. Capt Lumpkin was repatriated to America in 1948 from India and reinterred in the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at San Antonio, Texas on 2 June 1948.
